Easter Day 3
Monday 5th AprilSILVA National Orienteering League Race # 7
Course Setter - Ben Rattray Controller – Darryl Erbacher
Map - Collector Hill, 1:10,000. Recently fieldworked by Bob Allison, Hugh Moore & Darryl Erbacher.
Terrain Collector Hill is an unusual area and courses include areas of interesting rock ridge with large cliff lines, hill-sides with termite mounds and an old mining area. Runnability is highly variable from open running farm paddocks and open eucalyptic forest to areas of significant fallen timber and low visibility casuarina. This should test a range of skills. For a short video from the course setter check online.
A number of courses (courses 1 to 8, 15 and 16) come through a spectator control near the finish and follow a marked route to a fence crossing. The marked route loops close to the arena so spectators can cheer you on. You may want to leave a drink next to the marked route. Competitors are reminded that marked routes must be followed.
Directions A 45 minute drive north of Canberra (en route to Sydney) just past Collector. Follow the Federal Highway north out of Canberra 50km from the Antill St roundabout on the very northern side of Canberra. The event area is approximately 3.5km north of Collector on the east side of the Federal Highway. The NSW RTA have insisted that CARS DO NOT TURN RIGHT off the Federal Highway. You must continue 500m past the event area, & follow “detour” signs left into Baxters Lane. Follow directions (~500m) until you emerge back onto the Federal Highway. TAKE EXTREME CAUTION crossing over the Federal Highway ensuring there is enough room for your car in the central reservation before moving across the northbound lanes. Travel south on the Federal Highway for 500m before turning left into the event area. Follow signs a short distance to parking. Location map here.
Parking Please park as directed. A Gold coin donation, will be collected from each car on entering the parking area and donated to the Rural Fire Service. The Arena is approximately 300m from the parking area.
Special Notes There are numerous wombat homes on the area, take care especially in low areas (large gullies). There are some red and white flags in the forest marking a property boundary and old fence line, these are otherwise not related to the orienteering event. Towards the end of most courses there is an area of old mining activity, there is some junk on the ground. Usual care should be taken with the rock ridge and fallen timber.
In order to maximise use of the rock ridge, courses typically loop around a small area. As a result care must be taken to ensure you are navigating to the correct next control. As with all events, running to the wrong control, or out of order may be considered by your competitors as a sign of poor orienteering. There is likely to be numerous headless chooks running around in the area. Consider it an O-Ringen type experience.
Warm-up and Competition Areas Competitors should warm-up between the arena and the car park as well as on the way to the start. Forested areas (ie not open paddocks) should be considered out of bounds.
Take care moving between cars and the Arena and between the Arena and the start - you are likley to cross paths with FRANTIC competitors. Please note signs of caution.
Start Start is 250m east of the arena. Start times will be between 9:00am and 12:30 pm. The start interval will be 2 minutes. Elite Start Is within the Arena. Elite competitors have a chasing start. Competitors should check their start time upon arriving in the arena. Start times will be displayed next to the elite start, which is in the arena. The leader of each class will start first, with other runners starting at times reflecting the difference between the leader's cumulative time over the rest of the carnival and their own. Chasing starts will occur up to 45 min behind the leader. From this point competitors will be kept in order but started at 1 min intervals. Your map will be identified by your start number; it is the competitor's responsibility to ensure that they pick up the correct map.
Elite class start times will be: Start time for leader M21E & W21E 11:45 M17-20E & W17-20E 10:30
Elite courses include butterfly loops through common controls. Follow the course on your map. There is little use in following the person who started in front of you.
